The WFA was founded by Jeff and Lisa King in order to create the highest level of football for women in North America.  The formula was simple.  Jeff and Lisa’s goal was to create a league where all players could afford to play regardless of income level. This meant keeping travel regionalized and charging a fraction of what other leagues charge.

In 2009, the WFA rewarded playoff teams with financial assistance in the form of travel and gameday funds.  They awarded thousands of dollars to the semi-finalists and finalists and awarded the National Champions with custom uniforms and championship rings. This was the type of league that aspiring players were looking for.

Within the first five months of starting, the WFA had grown to 32 teams, making it the  fastest growing league in the history of the sport.  This momentum continued as the WFA grew by an additional twenty-five percent after its first year, making it the fastest growing league in the country. The League currently has 41 teams stretching from coast to coast, from Tampa to Philadelphia to Detroit to California.

“We call ourselves an alliance because we all work together to make this sport better every year,” stated Jeff King, “If teams are not successful, then the league will not succeed, so it doesn’t make sense for league owners to prosper financially when team owners struggle to keep their team out of debt.”

The WFA is dedicated to its player and team owners first and will continue its goal of getting the best female athletes in North America to play the nation’s most popular sport.

WFA FOUNDERS

DR. LISA KING AND JEFF KING

Jeff King was a blue chip football recruit out of Clovis High School, Clovis, California, as an All-State linebacker and was named to the school’s “All Millennium Team.” He was offered a scholarship at the University of Washington but a blown knee in the North/South California Shrine Game cost him not only his scholarship but also his dream of playing in the NFL. Doctors told him he would never play another game of football.

Not only did he continue playing, but he continued his football career at Fresno City College where he led the nation in sacks and was inducted into the Fresno City Wall of Fame. For the next 13 years, he played professional football in Europe for the Magdeburg Virgin Guards and the Corinthian Cowboys. During the off-season he came home to Fresno, California to play for the Fresno Bandits, where he helped lead the team to two National Championships. He was inducted to the Minor League Football Hall of Fame.

Dr.Lisa King was an All American soccer star at Bucknell University.  She was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year, and First Team All-League three years in a row. She became the first female soccer player to be inducted into the Bucknell Hall of Fame and continues to hold every scoring record at the University.  She also continues to hold three scoring records in the Patriot League.  She spent her years after college attending graduate school to be a Forensic Psychologist and playing semi-professional soccer in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California.

After Jeff and Lisa became engaged they created the Central Valley Football League and the Central Cal Crusaders semi-pro football team. The League’s goal was to keep young men out of gangs and provide them a second opportunity to go to college. Within three years the league claimed one National Championship team and two State Championship teams.  The league earned “Best New League” honors in 2006 and Jeff was awarded “Commissioner of the Year” honors by the Minor League Football News. In 2009, nine players were recruited from the CVFL to play college football.  Jeff is the owner/coach of the Crusaders and Lisa had earned a spot on the team as a kicker. When Lisa learned about women’s football, she made the 400-mile round trip journey once a week where she tried out and later played wide receiver for the Los Angeles Amazons, a women’s professional football team.  Lisa competed on the Amazons through two seasons in two different leagues and became the second leading scorer on the team in 2008.
